[...] … How exactly does this trade impact the 76ers? Miller comes in and probably takes many of the minutes of Iverson. I would also suspect that Smith allows the 76ers to play at the center and power forward spots a combination of Samuel Dalembert, Steven Hunter, Chris Webber, Smith, and Alan Henderson. In other words, the team going forward should stop playing players at the big men slots that are not big men, a problem I noted a few days ago. [...]

For those looking for dissenting opinions on Iverson, check out Bill Simmons' espn column on AI and the reader reactions. I agree with DB for what its worth...

The Sixers don't have a win-win situation in front of them, but there does seem to be decent opportunity to use an Inverson trade to improve their fortunes.

In terms of productivity I look at the Iverson-to-Boston rumor and note an above average guard (Delonte West .178 last year) and front court player (Al Jefferson .113 or Kendrick Perkins .156) as possible Sixer acquisitions. Given the problem you note with the Sixers' light front line, an addition like Jefferson (improved this year) or Perkins could add more wins. There's a reasonable chance West could outperform Ollie or Green in the backcourt too.

The flips-side of an Iverson trade is that, even if it leads to less productivity and fewer wins this year, it might be a fine year to be unproductive. Gred Oden, Kevin Durant, Joakim Noah and a handful of other college players could leave the Sixers in much better shape next year.

"The good news is that Philadelphia is still only two games out of the playoffs. So it is possible for this team to improve slightly and still have playoff tickets to sell."

Dave, I don't agree with what you wrote. Just because the Nets have underperformed for the first part of this season doesn't mean you're best guess for their final record should extrapolate from the first 15-20 games and ignore last year.

From what i understand an iverson deal would work bring back a point guard of similar age, but in the NBA's eye's one of inferior production. Someone like Mike James from the T-Wolves, or Andre Miller of the Nuggets. Along with that guy would be another player who offers something attractive to Billy King and the sixers, maybe Randy Foye, or perhaps a player from a third team. Then a bunch of bodies would be thrown in to make the salary add up.

My opinion is that both Miller and James (in particular the former of the two) offers a at least the same level of production as Iverson.

So if they can wrangle a decent young player, or perhaps some salary relief or a first round pick, the 76ers could make out well.

In the end the 76ers would be better off with more effecient shooters like Iguodala, Dalembert, and Korver, taking a few more shots each. So as long as they get a PG who is above average, and they do not absorb any terrible contracts, i could see this deal helping them considerably.

While posting in response to the Knicks topic, it looks like you got this one up. I had a comment about Iverson with relationship to the present Knicks. Essentially, given that the Knicks are a better rebounding team and Iverson would likely replace a Crawford and Marbury, perhaps even allowing them to go with one guard (AI) and supplement with a better rebounder at the "2," he might actually be more of a plus in NYC. The Knicks have been a bit better than their opponents on the boards this year, something that's critical for an Iverson led team to succeed.

Of course this doesn't help Philly one bit though the collective foolishness of the Sixers and Knicks may just be what this sort of deal needs to see itself home.
