Great post, thanks. I've only recently discovered the ponies and am looking on the web for more information on how to interpret the "language/code" of horse racing. As someone just coming it, it looks mind boggling complicated. (I've learned it can be simple and fun). But, I was wondering if anyone posting in the comments can recommend a good website or two for a beginner? PS> I've only had the pleasure of going to Atlantic City and watching the simulcast TVs, I hope to get to a track someday soon.

Very interesting post.

Is there evidence that the longshot bias is not applicable to Triple Crown races, which likely have a different set of participant betters?

[...] Steve Walters, guest blogging at The Wages of Wins Journal, touts the beauty and “purity” of betting on the horses. Really! He discusses the beauty of both the thoroughbreds themselves, and the computations that go into placing just the right wager. [...]

John: I plead guilty to the 2nd count of the indictment. One day I promise to atone by spending some quality time at World Cup matches.

Kent: True, true. But the horses do seem to love to run.

Claire: Everyone loves Aunt Louise... but let me know when you're going to the track, OK? Baby needs a new pair of shoes.

I think it's rude that we make these horses run around in a circle just to entertain ourselves. We should be nicer to the horses.
