[...] Last August I noted that the 2007 Senior National Team was the best USA team since 1996. This was determined by looking at the average Wins Produced per 48 minutes [WP48] of each Senior National Team since 1992 (when NBA players first started competing in the Olympics). Here are the results I reported last year: [...]

i felt another big factor for failure of 2004 is the personality of the team member and coach. It's hard when you have marbury, AI and larry borwn all together. this cannot be a positive atmosphere for rest of the team

With winning by 30 plus every night and playing efficient basketball I bet you everyone has a pretty good wp48 for the tourney. It would be interesting to compare the tourney wp48 to the regular season wp48.

I haven't done the math, but it looks like Lebron James probably has a pretty good WP48 for the tournament so far. Given the way Coach K handled Howard and Bosh last time around, this can only be bad news for Lebron's playing time.

Is anyone out there becoming completely
frustrated with all the slights being thrown
at Team USA?

Skip Bayless says they are the third best team
in the word right now.

Noone is making them the favorite to win
the games in Beijing. That I have to wait
an entire year for this team to prove everyone
wrong is absolutely killing me.

Also, when I'm yelling at the tv saying
"Their wp48 is 50 percent higher than
for the worldchampionships you dumb
mother##$$%$%$QWT%$RWET$," noone has
any clue what I'm talking about.

Also its great to see the truth behind
what's called chemistry? Jason Kidd doesn't
bother to shoot because he does not have to.
Thats not some coach creating chemistry thats
a smart basketball player. Kobe Bryant
expending tons of energy on the defensive end
is not some coach creating chemistry. Its
a smart player deciding that their are 2
other scorers on offense but only one guy like
him on defense.

Here's too TEAM USA taking the apathy its
own country men have against it and shoving
up everyone's you know where.

I have another theory why the NBA ratings
are so bad. Too many people have the false
notion that we no longer have the best
basketball players in the world. The problem
is that the leaders have no clue who
the best players are in the NBA.

Jaskevicius is a prime example of this.
He looked amazing in the olympics in 04', but
he can't even make impact enough to get off
the bench in Goldend State/Indiana. Shouldn't
this be a hint that NBA basketball is a little
better than everyone thinks.

You have the right coach and staff in place and most of the right players, I would like to see Duncan or KG up front but these players are no slouches, I think the usa is giving itself a pretty good shoot for the gold.

Well, they may have picked better players, but apparently not everything is going, er, Dreamily, according to Chris Sheridan.

Brett,
I think it is the case that the quality of foreign teams has improved (although I have not done any study to confirm this point). But I think that problems we see with Team USA are tied to changes in the quality of players invited to play. If we were still sending the kind of players who played in 1992 and 1996, I do not think the teams we see in international competition would have much of a chance to win.
