A Couple of Notes of Interest

Later today I am going to comment on the 2005 NBA rookie class. For now, I wanted to draw attention to a couple of notes of interest.

Sports Biz with Darren Rovell

A few months ago Darren Rovell moved from ESPN to CNBC. Somewhere along the way with this move came a temporary end to Rovell’s Gatorade blog. This blog built upon the research Rovell reported in “First in Thirst”, which chronicled the success of Gatorade. Today I discovered that Rovell returned to blogging on Gatorade last month.

Although it is great to see Rovell back discussing Gatorade, that is not the point of this post. This month Rovell launched a new blog entitled Sports Biz with Darren Rovell. There you will find a plethora of stories examining all aspects of the business of sports.

Looking at the two blogs it appears that Rovell is making frequent entries in both forums. Not sure how he does that, but it is good to see him back on-line.

Trumpeting the Value of Scholarship in Sports

Much of my research involves the study of sports. Last summer I was asked by Jim Peach [New Mexico State and former president of the Western Social Science Association (WSSA)] to write a brief essay for the WSSA News “trumpeting the value of scholarship in sports” (the actual title of the essay).

This essay appeared in the Fall 2006 issue of the WSSA News and can be read in its entirety HERE. A quick synopsis of this brief essay: Basically I argue that researchers in economics, psychology, and sociology should do more to mine the immense data that sports provide. Even if you are not a sports fan, this data can be used to uncover much about how people process information and make decisions. Of course if you are a sports fan, life cannot get any better. We are already being paid as college professors to do academic research. Why not spend that time looking at something that as a fan you were going to look at anyway?

My thanks to both Jim Peach and Larry Gould for helping me put this brief essay together.
