Tonight I was told there is another blog willing to join the Wages of Wins network. Andrew Shookhoff – at NYK Mistakes — will be covering the New York Knicks from the perspective of Wins Produced.
Andrew has already offered the following two posts.
As the Knicks start off by ruining free agency
Just when you think Donnie Walsh can’t screw up anymore…
Both posts are well worth reading (even for people who are not fans of the Knicks). So hopefully everyone can head over to Andrew’s site and welcome him to the network.

Lee’s WP48 > Ellis’ WP48. Great!

Is it too much to ask that analysis include more than just stating the difference in players’ WP48?
Analysis I would like to see:
1) An explanation of why the players relevant to the article are seemingly valued differently by WP48 than by the public (including the people responsible for the transaction). What components behind their respective WP48s cause Ellis to be overrated and Lee to be underrated?
2) What changes are possible to both the players’ WP48 and commonly perceived value next year? Will Monta Ellis’ WP48 improve next year in the D’Antoni system? What effect has D’Antoni had on other players’ WP48? Will Ellis’ below average talents (according to WP48) be exposed next year, or will his new surroundings cause him to become even more overrated? How will Lee’s rebounding and shooting efficiency (and other stats) change as a result of his move? If he gets a few less boards a game and his shot selection changes as a result of a new team offensive style, what can we expect his WP48 to be?
Basically… I’m interested in reading any type of analysis beyond simply stating the WP48s of players. I assume that most people that read this blog consistently are like me and know how to – and do – check WP48 data on their own.

Very, Very unimpressed by your new contributor. Seems he talks about nothing else but stats which says to me he really doesn’t understand the sport.
Our new PF is a lot better than our old one no matter what his silly computer calculations say. I like David Lee a lot, just not at $13 mill plus a year.
Donnie Walsh has done an outstanding job this off season considering we loss out on Lebron. Really not sure who can ask for anything more.

I like what the Knicks have done so far, they’ve assembled a squad better suited to D’Antoni’s system and should be more competitive and entertaining. Mozgov looks like he’s in the Tyson Chandler mold, albeit more aggressive. Point guard is still a question and, I’ve never been much of a Stoudemire fan. He reminds me of Shawn Kemp; there’ll be a sharp dropoff once the physical ability declines.

Todd2:
If you’re not a Stoudemire fan and you think PG is still a question, then what is it you like about what the Knicks have done so far – the Russian & GSW trash? Nobody’s seen the Russian play & nobody’s seen the GSW players play a lot either because they were hurt for most of last season. The Knicks are an absolute joke and they don’t deserve their loyal fanbase. Dolan has run this team into the ground and offered nothing but false hope.

This should be a good test then. Wp48 thinks the Knicks will be worse by a good margin without Lee. Meanwhile, almost everyone else seems to think the team got better.
The proof is always in the pudding.

Mar,
All the scouting I’ve seen point to the Russian being the real deal. Felton,Walker,Azubuike,Randolph,Amare were all above average (>.100 WP48 last Year). This is a playoff team in the East. If the russian is good (and Amare and Randolph Play more minutes at PF) this could be a very fun team to watch.

Funny that the new guys first two contributions have ,as they say in the news business, been overtaken by events.

Jamaal–
David Lee projects to be a 16-17 win player for his team in 2011. That means his team will be paying him 812K per win. In today’s market, 13 mil for a 16-17 win player is a steal.

I like the Knicks moves so far.
If you look closer at Amare’s season last year you’ll realize how much better he was in the 2nd half when he recovered his lost timing and athleticism after down time from eye surgery.
The Knicks may have overpaid for him, but he’s a huge upgrade over Jared Jeffries and will be helpful in attracting future free agents when they open another max slot for next year.
Lee was traded for Anthony Randolph (and Turiaf/Azubuike) .
While Lee may be the more productive player now, Randolph just turned 21, is massively more athletic, fits better with Amare, and gives them a shot blocking inside presence.
On his rookie salary, he’s an incredible bargain and could easily be a better overall player than Lee by next year given that he actually plays defense.
Turiaf gives them a physical defensive shot blocking inside presence at a reasonable short term salary for 15-20 minutes a night. They desperately needed players like him.
Azubuike is a deadly shooter, solid defender, fits perfectly into the system and is an upgrade over Hughes at SG.
If they get any improvement from kids like Gallinari, Chandler (who was also massively better once he recovered from surgery), and Douglas they could easily be better at every position other than the Lee for Randolph swap (which may not be as large as it looks due to Lee deficiency on D)
In addition, the Knicks seem to have found a real gem in the second round of the draft. Landry Fields looks like a real NBA player that will fit perfectly.
The Knicks are very likely to battle for the 6-8 seed this year barring injury.

“Donnie Walsh has done an outstanding job this off season considering we loss out on Lebron.”
Jamaal, to say you “lost out on LeBron” implies the Knicks actually had a chance of signing him. There was no chance LeBron would go to NY. None. The Knicks are the place superstars go to wreck their reputations. You really think LeBron is that much of a masochist to go play for the Knicks?
