Tom Sunnergren – of Philadunkia – recently sent along a number of questions for me to address. A few days ago I answered some of these (I hope to get to the rest of the questions this week) and my answers have now been posted.
Two quick comments on the answers…
- Tom admits that as a fan of Allen Iverson he was not initially impressed with The Wages of Wins. At least, that was true before he read the book.
- And Henry Abbott – of TrueHoop – notes this about my answers: It’s never personal with the numbers. But, for the record, David Berri’s numbers hate the Sixers.

Prof.,
Love the quote “It’s never personal with the numbers”

That should put the sixers at about 20 wins with evan turner pushin them to around 24. The clippers should be bad too, but blake griffin should push them to around 24+ wins. The wizards on the other hand should be around 10 wins, so would be a safe bet to say the wizards will have the worst record this season?

Anyone read Hollinger’s forecasts? he has Philly going 43-39. I was floored by this. Philly has no capable big men in the post for defense (or offense) and no efficient outside shooting. That’s a recipe for a bad team.
His argument isn’t even based on PER. He basically claims that Philly will improve a lot on defense because of Collins and that the young guys will improve a bunch (plus turner).
Yeah, I agree they’ll improve defensively a bit, even without Dalembert, simply because of effort alone…but 33+ wins would be a hugely successful season. 43 seems astronomical.

Hollinger is living in a fantasy world. It’s a fantasy world I wish I lived in, but it’s a fantasy world nonetheless.

Tom Sunnergren:
Why haven’t most reporters/TV analysts considered Lou Williams a threat to start at PG? He played good when healthy last year.

One: Sweet Lou’s considered a shoot-first guy and so an imperfect distributor.
Two: The Philadelphia media/fans/Sixers staff are enamored of Jrue Holiday. Lou will get minutes, but the only way he starts is if Jrue gets injured or Evan Turner really struggles. And, come to think of it, even if Holiday gets injured, I’m told Turner will take the point and Lou will, presumably, play SG.
